Rachel Roy is a Manhattan-based fashion designer that designs clothes for real, everyday woman. Roy believes that women should not follow trends, but be true to their own personal style. Rachel’s clothes are a wonderful mix of hip, edgy, downtown cool, tempered by a subtle edge of uptown chic. Rachel got her start in fashion design in 2003 while she was an intern at Rocawear clothing, co-created by rapper Jay-Z and Damon Dash. Rachel worked in many facets of the company and eventually was promoted to the role of Creative Director. Dash and Roy were married in 2005 and soon after, Roy launched her clothing line.
Rachel’s line Rachel Rachel Roy is extremely affordable; the line retails from $59 to $299 for sportswear, $79 to $199 for footwear and $40 to $195 for jewelry and handbags. I have personally scored an awesome dress from the Rachel Rachel Roy line from Macys.com on sale for $29.00! The dress is absolutely stunning and I honestly believe that it’s the best $29.00 I ever spent.
Rachel is well-known for her concern for her clientele and insists that clothing not only be affordable, but also comfortable, beautiful and realistic for most women to wear. She takes great care in her designs and uses extensive draping for flattery in her dresses and tops. Her jewelry, shoes and accessories are noticeably funky and fresh, but never completely over the top, always walking the line between downtown rock ‘n roll and uptown class.
Rachel Roy has dressed many celebrities, most notably, First Lady Michelle Obama, who was spotted wearing the “Reid Sleeveless” dress designed by Roy. She also counts Eva Mendes, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Garner, Iman, Lucy Liu, Sharon Stone and Penelope Cruz as some of her fans.
Many people ask about Rachel’s ethnicity, as she is very unique looking. Her beautiful features are the product of her Indian father and Dutch mother. Rachel has a wonderful instinct for clothing design—her accessories are always on trend and she can be looked at as a true inspiration for anyone who has a desire to pursue fashion design.
Roy’s Rachel Roy New York line can be found in many upscale clothing stores such as Nordstrom, Nieman Marcus, and Bergdorf Goodman. Her less expensive line, Rachel Rachel Roy, can be found at Macy’s stores. More information can be found at www.rachelroy.com.
